I participated in Amelia Dowling’s exhibition “A Wall of Nos” at @kingsartistrun, Melbourne from 6-27 April 2019. • My ‘story of no’ was one being shared, accompanied by the embroidered NO. Thank you for choosing my story, Amelia. And thank you Ika @Vantiani for letting me know about this art project. I think the theme is very powerful, especially for Asian women. We were taught that saying “no” is very rude and we should always please others, while in fact it is contrary to our conscience. Saying no is liberating and empowering. I hope we can say “NO” more often when our heart says so 🌹 • I also put others’ ‘stories of NO’, curated by Amelia Dowling - link on my bio. I hope they inspire you to do the same ♥️ • Posted @withrepost • @amelia__dowling "Challenging authority can begin by using your voice to speak out, by refusing to accept the status quo or by asking for more. Dowling’s work 'A Wall of Nos' combines multiple voices with her own to consider the psychological and emotional demands of saying no. There is a feminist critique here in how women are typically socialised to be agreeable and compliant, and are often told being ‘nice’ is more important than being assertive." - excerpt from essay by Curator @sophiatron __________________________________________________A Wall of Nos is currently on display as part of the joint exhibition with @chloebensahel 'Barriers to Entry' @kingsartistrun. For this project I sourced 30 'stories of no' from anonymous people via social media. Their stories can be read via the link in my bio. No can be and often is a loaded word, so thank you to everyone who sent me your story, I appreciate your trust and honesty. __________________________________________________Exhibition runs this week Wed - Sat 12-6pm (including Anzac Day) and then it's finished! Thanks to anyone who's made the time to go and check it out so far. __________________________________________________Featured: Amelia Dowling, A Wall of Nos, 2019, hand embroidery, cotton, wooden dowel, 30 works, varying sizes, photography by @travelling_jen
